Choosing potentiometer for 1.23 to 5.33V output swing:

  • Vout = Vref * ( 1 + R2 / R1 ).  Vref = 1.23V.  5k > R1 > 1k.     (From the datasheet)
  • R1 = 1k, R2 = 0-5k,    Vref = 1.23 <-> 6.23V
  • max_voltage = 1.23 + 1.23 * ( 5k / R1 )
  • v_max / 1.23 = 1 + R2 / R1
  • ( v_max / 1.23 ) - 1 = R2 / R1
  • R1 = R2 / [ ( v_max / 1.23  ) - 1 ]
  • R2 = 5k, v_max = 5
  • R1 = 5k / ( ( 5 / 1.23 ) - 1 ) = 1631.

  • What if R1 = 1.5k, a common value?  ( Common resistor values )
  • v_max = 1.23 + 1.23 * ( 5k / 1.5 ) =  5.33 V.  This is fine.
