These are the completed Exertion Instruments so far.
The Electric Eel is an instrument based on the medieval serpent. In place of the serpent's
reed, an amplifier and a tiny microcontroller drives a speaker using energy from the player's arm movement,
restoring some long-lost corporeality to electronic music.
Exertion Guitar #2
Handled like a traditional guitar, this instrument produces tones like an electronic synthesizer, yet it is portable and spontaneous due to its implanted electrical generator which produces energy as needed, note-by-note.

The Exertion Kickdrum
Susanne models the Exertion Kick Drum. Depressing the pedal slides the gear rack, spins a generator and produces enough electrical power for a single percussion sound. Internal electronics synthesize and amplify the drum sound until the electrical power dissipates, similar to an all-acoustic kick drum. On top of the instrument, a bank of controller knobs allows the player to customize the sound, choosing between 11 different drum sounds, plus the ability to vary parameters like pitch, decay, etc., similar to electronic kick drums.

I had dreams of making this giant discarded printer into an Electric Eel, but they remained dreams.
